The rolling balls between the top plate and the table surface exploits the fact that the top surface goes twice as far as the ball. The ball is not attached to either the top plate or the bottom table surface.
The gliding plate is flat and low profile to imitate a writing table or desk top. The top plate touching the forearm will slide with the forearm.
